Originally from the great state of Texas, Derrick moved to Southern California in 2012 with a passion for building relationships, hard work, and real estate. After studying Business Administration at the University of Houston, he launched his career in Corporate Business Sales across the South Region, ultimately relocating to Los Angeles. Over the next decade, Derrick became a top Sales Executive for a Fortune 500 telecommunications company, developing an extensive network of professional clients through his daily business dealings.
Recognizing the rapidly evolving Los Angeles real estate landscape, Derrick transitioned full-time into real estate and investment opportunities. Shortly after earning his license, he joined a top-producing luxury team in Beverly Hills, which played a pivotal role in the record-breaking $90 million sale of the historic Owlwood Estate in 2017—famed for its notable former owners, including Marilyn Monroe, Sonny and Cher, and Tony Curtis. This landmark sale cemented Derrick’s understanding of the extraordinary possibilities within the Los Angeles real estate market.
Derrick later joined Coldwell Banker Realty in Beverly Hills—one of the city’s premier luxury brokerages—where he founded and now serves as Executive Director of The Smith Associates. He leverages exceptional people skills, deep market knowledge, hands-on street insight, and elite negotiation tactics to deliver an unmatched client experience. With over $125 million in on- and off-market sales since 2019, Derrick is quickly emerging as one of Los Angeles’ leading brokers.
He has been recognized as a 2026 and 2024 Real Estate All-Star by Los Angeles Magazine and ranked in the Top 0.5% of Agents in the Country by The Wall Street Journal + RealTrends. He is also a recipient of Coldwell Banker’s 2025 International Society of Excellence and President’s Elite Award (2022–2024)—honors reserved for top-performing agents worldwide. Derrick specializes in residential sales, multi-family investments, luxury development, and commercial land acquisitions. He is known for “knowing the numbers,” staying ahead of market trends, uncovering off-market opportunities, and maintaining complete transparency with his clients. Outside of work, Derrick enjoys traveling, days at the beach, golfing, coaching Little League baseball, and spending quality time with his wife, Ashley, and their three boys.
